His hand shot out, landing on her knee, fingers gripping tight. “Shut the hell up.”

  ~ * ~

The woman was going to kill him, literally. After everything she’d put him though, after scaring the shit out of him, shaving twenty years off his goddamn life—now she was sitting there all but begging him to fuck her. How was he supposed to resist? How could he say no with Lucy squirming in her seat beside him, wet and hot and so damn ready for him?

His hand was still on her knee and he couldn’t help but slip it higher.

As much as he wanted inside her, in a way that might send him insane, he wasn’t going to fuck her in a car on the side of the road, not the first time anyway. “Spread your legs,” he gritted out.

She did what he asked instantly, color high on her cheeks, her breathing choppy.

Moving his hand higher still, he took her dress with him, shoving it up her thighs as he went. He glanced away from the road, needing to see what he’d just uncovered. Her panties were yellow and, Jesus, had little flowers all over them. He turned back to the road, brushing his thumb over the innocent-looking fabric shielding her pussy, and groaned. Lucy wasn’t lying—she was turned way the fuck on, hot and wet, so damn wet she soaked right through.

“You wanna come, baby girl?” A shudder moved though her. He felt it, and it damn near undid him.

  “Please. Please, Adam.”

Cursing, he planted his foot and searched for a place to pull off the road. “Can you wait a few minutes, sweetheart?”

  “God, I hurt…I…”

“Slide your fingers inside those sexy little panties and play with yourself, baby. I don’t want you hurting.” He glanced at her again. Her face was flushed darker, expression unsure.

  “I don’t…I can’t…”

“Do it,” he rasped. “My Lucy’s fucking fearless. She wouldn’t give a fuck that I was watching her. Show me. Show me how you touch yourself when you’re on your own.”

Her eyes burned into the side of his head as he frantically looked for a place to fucking stop.

  “Okay,” she whispered.

Oh fuck. What the hell was he thinking? How was he supposed to drive with his dream girl riding her fingers beside him? He looked back at her, at her hand slipping down the front of that flimsy fucking fabric, the only thing shielding her. All he got was a quick snapshot of her, legs spread, mouth dropping open, fingers moving against her slick lips, before he had to turn away.

  She moaned.

  “Feels good, baby?”

  “Yes.”

“Shit, Luce, I can smell you. Rub your clit for me.”

  “Ahhh.”

He could hear her breathing change, the sound of her wet pussy as she played with herself. How the fuck was he managing to stay on the damn road? “Don’t come. You feel it building, you pull it back, you hear me? When you come, you’re gonna do it riding my fingers not yours.”

A shuddery breath burst past her lips. “But I need—”

  “Don’t.”

Her fingers started moving faster. “I need more.”

Her hand dipped lower. “Do not push inside, Lucy.”

“I have to…I…” Her voice hitched.

“Fuck.” Finally, a spot wide enough to pull over came into view. He wrenched the car to the side and shut it off.

  Lucy bit her lip. “Adam…”

He pulled her hand free, shoved his down the front, and pushed two fingers into her tight-as-fuck pussy. He was leaning over her and tugged her down so she could drop back against the seat, body bowing under him.

Holy shit. He kept them deep, fucking her with his fingers while he sucked her throat, tasted her smooth skin. “So wet, Luce.” He brushed his thumb over her slippery swollen clit. “You gonna go off for me? You gonna let me feel it?”

“Oh God…I’m…ahhh…” Lucy jerked beneath him, and then she was coming, inner muscles clamping down on his fingers as she shook and cried out beneath him.

He’d never get used to seeing her like this. Never forget it either. He knew that much.

His cock was a relentless throb behind his zipper. It would be so easy to set it free, tear off her underwear, and thrust nice and deep into her wet heat. But that wasn’t happening, not here, not now.

He’d let her believe that morning that he’d slept in the car because he didn’t want her to get attached. He’d lied. It wasn’t Lucy he was really worried about. It wasn’t her he was afraid wouldn’t be able to let go after this road trip was over. How could he go back to sleeping with random strangers after having her beside him? Wrapped around him?

He knew the answer to that. He couldn’t.

He also knew he had a lot of sleepless nights in his future. But a lifetime of insomnia was worth it for this, for what she’d just given him. He only hoped like hell the memories of her would be enough to keep him warm at night, maybe even drown out the ones that didn’t want to let him go…or he was well and truly screwed.

  Chapter Eleven

Lucy tried to catch her breath, which wasn’t easy with Adam’s weight pressing down on her, the delicious heat of his body surrounding her, covering her. God, right then she’d rather pass out from lack of oxygen than push him off. He was breathing heavily, too, his erection pressing into her through the soft denim of his jeans, muscles held tight, trembling slightly.

His fingers were still down the front of her underwear, buried deep inside her, and she couldn’t help but tilt her hips, moaning softly when those thick, rough fingers kicked off another round of aftershocks.

A raspy hiss left Adam, his warm breath tickling her neck. She badly wanted to free that impressive bulge in his pants and feel him push inside her. Her hips rolled again like they had a mind of their own. But the way he held himself, so damn rigid, she didn’t think she’d get her wish. She was almost afraid to touch him. Her hands had somehow ended up above her head, hanging on to the door handle, but not touching him was an impossibility. Slowly lowering her arms as if she were about to pet a wild animal, she slid her hands down his back. He was like stone under her fingers, like he was about to burst out of his skin at any moment.

She turned her head and brushed her lips against his throat. “Adam.”

A shudder moved through his solid frame, strong enough to rock the car.

He was hard for her, he’d just made her come in a way she knew she’d never forget, but he was still pissed with her. And she could admit he had a right to be.

“I’m sorry I was so reckless. I shouldn’t have gotten in the car with him like I did.” Her mouth stayed against his warm skin as she spoke, the intimacy of the moment making her belly flutter and her pulse race.

Finally, he lifted his head and stared down at her. His gaze searched hers, dropping to her lips and back. “Promise me you won’t do anything like that ever again, not ever, Lucy.” His eyes darkened for a second. “I won’t…I won’t be there to come after you. So there can’t be a next time. You have to be more fucking careful…think before you jump.” He licked his lips and swirled those wicked fingers inside her. “Promise me, Luce.”

The fierceness behind his words made her heart pound, while her body heated, getting worked up all over again. She didn’t want to talk about him not being there anymore, about this ending. So she slid a hand down between their bodies and cupped him through his jeans. “I don’t want to talk.”

  “Lucy—”

  “Kiss me.”

Color slashed his cheekbones and his gaze dropped to her mouth.

  “Please,” she whispered.

He cursed before his mouth came down on hers, kissing her hard and deep. And, oh shit, he made the sexiest noises. Like nothing could ever top kissing her, as if he needed it like he needed air. When Adam pressed his mouth to hers, it wasn’t just kissing. It felt more somehow. God, intense. They needed their very own word for this, what they were doing. She felt dizzy from it, from the heat and emotion he poured into it, into every life-breathing touch of his lips to
hers. She couldn’t get enough. No one had ever kissed her like this and she got the feeling no one else ever would.

Her fingers moved to his zipper.

A loud noise, like a freaking hurricane moving over them, filled the car, making the whole thing shake. “What the hell was that?”

  Adam lifted his head. “Eighteen-wheeler.”

That’s when she realized how exposed they were, and obviously Adam did, too, because he sat up, tugging her skirt down as he went.

He shifted away from her and gripped the steering wheel, releasing a rough breath. “We should get going. I need to get this car to Chicago. We’ve already had too many delays.”

Disappointment was a hollow ache. “Right. You’re right. We should get going.”

He turned to her and shook his head, cursing again. “Don’t know how I’m gonna survive the next six motherfucking hours.”

A zap of excitement lit up every nerve ending at the needy edge to his voice, along with a big heaped helping of hope. “Why is that?”

“I can smell you on my fingers. My dick’s hard enough to pound in nails and you’re sitting beside me in that fucking skirt.” He started the car. “I’ve also got an image in my head of that fucker with his hands all over you.”

Oh God. “What are…what are you saying?”

“We’ve gone this far. Fuck, I’m already going to hell anyway.” His gaze slid to her bare legs, taking in the way she squeezed them together, then higher until it met hers again. He dragged a hand across his mouth and started the car. “Tonight you’re mine. No holding back, no going slow.”

He turned on the radio and pulled out onto the road.

  ~ * ~

Lucy tried, but she did not fall asleep. She was awake for the entire agonizingly long six-hour drive. They chatted on and off about nothing of importance. He didn’t touch her again, not once. Not even when they stopped for food or a restroom break or just to stretch their legs. Adam kept at least five feet between them at all times. It was maddening.

The town they’d arrived in was fairly big, bigger than the last one they’d stayed in. She had no idea where she was, though. All she knew was she wanted food and a shower in that order.

Adam obviously read her mind because he pulled up outside a steak house and turned the car off. “Let’s get some dinner then find a place to stay.”

  “Sounds good.”

They both climbed out and she had the urge to grab onto his hand and lean into his side. Like they were a real couple. Stop it, Lucy. They walked in and were shown to a table right away. The place wasn’t packed but was not far off, and going by the smells coming from the kitchen, there was a good reason for that.

Her stomach rumbled. “I’m going to eat the biggest damn steak on the menu.”

  Adam chuckled. “There’s a surprise.”

“What do you mean by that?”

They took their seats in a cozy booth near the back, and gave their drinks order to the waitress. Adam rested against the leather seats, looking casual and sexy as hell. His beautiful lips quirked up on one side, giving her a small flash of straight white teeth. “You do this every time we all eat out.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Woman, your eyes are bigger than your stomach. But you eat everything anyway until you almost need to be carried out of the restaurant in a food coma, usually just to prove Joe wrong.”

She rolled her eyes. “I do not do that.” She totally did.

“You do.” He sat forward, resting his elbows on the table. “Usually I find your stubbornness entertaining—”

They were interrupted by the waitress delivering their drinks.

As soon as they were alone again, she quirked a brow at him. “And all this time I assumed you thought I was a pain in the ass.” She loved it when he was playful like this.

He snorted. “Oh, you’re definitely that.”

“Rude.” She took a sip of her beer.

“Tonight, though, I’m thinking leaving here in a food coma isn’t a good idea.”

“No?” She leaned forward a little, breath hitching when Adam’s eyes dipped to her cleavage. “And why is that?”

He took a pull of his own beer and the way his throat worked as he swallowed was one of the hottest things she’d ever seen. He put down his drink, long, thick fingers loosely gripping it, and his eyes locked on hers. She didn’t miss the bit of mischief there, and, man, did it look good on him. “I want you fully alert when I finally get in between those sexy as fuck thighs.”

Her lips parted as air rushed from her lungs. It was hard, but she was pretty sure her reply was somewhat coherent. “Well, what do you know? I think this is a first.”

  “For what?”

“The first time we actually agree on something.”

He muttered a curse under his breath as the waitress arrived back to take their orders. Lucy took another drink of her beer in the hopes of cooling her flaming skin a few degrees. It didn’t work, not with the way Adam watched her.

She had to hide her smile when she ordered a salad instead of steak. The man actually choked on his beer.

When they were alone again she grinned at him. “See? I can do what I’m told…occasionally.”

The grin on his face slipped, going all kinds of intense. “Is that right?”

“Yes.” She wasn’t sure why she was whispering, but the heat between them had driven even higher until it crackled.

  “Give me your underwear.”

Every erogenous zone in her body lit the hell up. “You…ah…”

“Now, baby girl. Give ’em to me.”

Fuck. The authority in his voice sent her need through the damn roof. Without breaking eye contact, she reached under her skirt, lifted her butt a little, and tugged them down her legs. Bunching them tight in her fist, she held them out for him over the table.

He took them, nostrils flaring, squeezing them tight in his wide fist. “I can feel how damp they are.”

  “I know,” she said.

  “You like that?”

“Yes.” She didn’t know what was happening, but she was close to diving over the table and straddling him.

He slid her panties into his pocket. “How does it make you feel, having your pussy bare in that tiny little skirt?” He leaned in. “Sitting across from me like that, wanting what only I can give you so bad you ache, and knowing before the night’s over I’m going to slide so deep inside you, you won’t know what fucking way is up?”

Lucy squirmed. “I’m not hungry anymore.”

  He growled. “I’m fucking ravenous.”

  “Adam,” she whispered.

“Your salad,” their waitress said, placing it down in front of her.

Lucy jolted, and glanced up at the other woman. “Oh…thank you.”

Adam cut into his steak across from her. They sat in silence and worked their way through their meals. She kept sneaking glances at him as she ate. Adam didn’t sneak any damn thing. He watched her, barely taking his eyes off her the whole time. He didn’t finish his meal, pushing the plate away when he’d gotten through half of it. Lucy had been picking at hers for the last five minutes.

“Ready?” he said, so low and full of meaning she felt it between her thighs.

  “Yes.”

She stood and he motioned for her to walk ahead. She felt his eyes on her the whole way, and was sure, with how short her skirt was, everyone could see how slick her thighs were. They’d know she was walking around bare-assed and so fucking turned on she was ready to climb Adam like a tree and beg him to put her out of her misery.

They didn’t talk as Adam drove to the nearest hotel or as they made their way along the walk to their room. She unlocked the door, God only knew how with the way her hands were shaking, and Adam followed her in with their bags.

The air was heavy, so damn thick she could barely breathe. Nerves started battering her rib cage. “I’ll just…I’m going to grab a shower.”

&n
bsp; He dipped his chin. “Don’t be long, Lucy.”

There it was again, that authority in his voice that turned her inside out. “Okay.”

She grabbed her bag and hustled to the bathroom. She worked quickly, shaking a little as she rinsed off the long day then stepped out and dried off. She wrapped a towel around her. It wasn’t like she needed clothes, right? When she opened the door, Adam was standing across the room, back to her, phone to his ear.

He was talking about some car that was booked into the garage tomorrow, and she instantly knew he was talking to one of her brothers. She hadn’t answered their calls, only texted them back. If they’d tried again, she didn’t know. She’d turned her phone off and it was staying that way. She wasn’t trying to punish them; she just had nothing to say. Hugh especially was like a dog with a bone. As far as he was concerned, the only place for her was school. Thinking about school made her think about other things—things she did not want to think about, things that made her feel like the crappiest human being in existence.

And the other reason she had turned off her phone.

No. She was never going back there. She couldn’t.

When she looked up, Adam was watching her. He’d ended the call and she hadn’t even noticed.

His hand holding the phone dropped to his side. “Hugh.”

  “I figured.”

His gaze traveled over her, and his chest expanded with his indrawn breath. Something shifted in his gaze and he looked away. “Luce—”

  “Don’t.”

“This is…” He shook his head. “Fuck, this is so wrong. Your brothers—”

“What we do has nothing to do with them. Not one damn thing.”

“They’d never forgive me for this…for touching you.”

Screw this. She wasn’t letting him beat himself up or get caught up in misplaced guilt. “I make my own decisions. I don’t answer to Hugh or Joe, I haven’t for a long time.” She moved toward him. “Do you ask them for permission before you sleep with a woman?” The idea of him sleeping with anyone else made her feel physically ill.
